International records management

Records retention is an increasingly important area for multinational organizations. US electronic discovery rules may require the production of a vast number of documents, even where they originated outside of the US. The expectation is that companies will be able to access them satisfactorily, sometimes within a short period of time.

Records include evidence of business transactions or dealings, support for the decisionmaking process, documentation of an organizations activities or finances or documentation of its history. They also include electronic documents.

This obviously means a large burden for you. It is essential that you understand obligations about the period of time for which you must retain a document and the options for its destruction. You need to keep on top of an area that is very capable of spiraling out of control.
